Press Availability By US Secretary of State John Kerry in Juba, South Sudan

John Kerry 2014-04-11 at 12.48.21 AM

SECRETARY KERRY: Well, good morning. I just completed an in-depth, very frank, and thorough discussion with President Kiir. And throughout the meeting, I think it’s fair to say that both of us spoke very candidly, very directly, and we got to the issues that I came here to discuss. Throughout the meeting, I made it clear to him that he needs to do everything in his power to end the violence, and also to begin a process of national dialogue, a process by which there is the beginning of discussions – real discussions – about a transition government that can bring peace to the country.

Education in Maridi Diocese, South Sudan

Education suffered badly during the conflict that began in the 80s. Most of the teachers went to war and many school buildings were destroyed.

Classes still meet under trees, vulnerable to the weather and without proper equipment. The teachers are often untrained and just a few steps ahead of their pupils.

But the church is on the move, and schooling from nursery to post-secondary is high on Bishop Justin’s mission agenda.
